This past weekend, I had the opportunity to take my pal Cletus over to a McDonald’s near-ish me in Downers Grove. We used to live in Downers Grove, so this was near and dear to me. They closed the McDonald’s that I knew and loved (and visited for many a McDonald’s Monopoly), and opened a new one a mile down the road. And this new McD’s was special.

KioskThe first of its kind in Illinois, the Create Your Taste menu offers a build-your-own burger feature. When Cletus and I walked into the McD’s we were greeted by one of the many helpful team members, who showed us how to operate the order menu screen.

With so many menu options to choose from, I could make whatever burger I wanted.

And I wanted all the cheese.

The menu boasts three different cheese options including a pepper jack, white cheddar and the traditional American.

Now, I’m not a big fan of American cheese in a lot of circumstances, but there are some food stuffs that are classic and nostalgic and exactly what  I want…and a cheese burger with American cheese is one of them.

Of course, I clicked the buttons for all three cheeses on my burger.

How many burger patties? I only need one. I’ve already got cheese, cheese, and cheese.

What type of bun? I want the artisan roll – it’s the most like the original bun.

Add Bacon

Add bacon for a small charge? Yep. Definitely.

What sauce did I want? Oh, I’m thinkin’ the sweet barbecue (which is actually sweet and smoky).

What extras? Let’s go with pickles, lettuce and red onion for the win.

Fries? Oh heck yes.

When it was Cletus’ turn to order, he opted for a specialty build, instead of his own creation.

Build Your BurgerThe Hot All Over had pepper jack cheese and jalapeños, and was an obvious win for Cletus, though he was disappointed that he couldn’t find pineapple on the menu.

Specialty BurgersWhen a team member delivered our food a little less than 10 minutes later, he was SUPER helpful, offering to bring me extra BBQ sauce and ketchup. The fries were OMG served in the CUTEST little fry baskets, making this a serious happy lunch hour for this girl.

Fry basketI may have already eaten half the fries by the time I remembered to take the picture. Don’t hate.

McSmokyAnd of course, the piece de resistance. The McSmoky Triple Cheese Burger. The cheeses melted together in a magical cheesy burger land. The smoky BBQ added a rich flavor and the rest of the ingredients were exactly what I wanted on my burger. Thanks McDonald’s! This was delish.

The giveaway has ended, but I’m still curious…

What burger toppings would you put on your dream burger (and while pineapple is not currently on the menu at McD’s, you’re free to suggest it as a dream burger topping for your sammy)?

  1. It sounds incredibly weird, but the best burger I’ve had recently was a bacon cheeseburger with a smear of peanut butter. So I would go with that, and then also top it off with fried pickle chips. (Yes, PB and fried pickles is delicious…you just have to stick with the more savory PB and NOT the sweet PB).

  2. Wow, this is fancy. I’m going to be in town this weekend, and I’m kind of tempted to go check this thing out. I don’t know that it’d really be useful for me since I like to keep my burgers pretty simple, but still… worth trying once for the cool factor alone.

  3. I think it deleted my comment. 🙁
Last time I skipped the American. This time all 3 cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole, jalapeños, crispy strips, ketchup, mustard, spices mayo. All on the shiny bun. And yes fries on the side

  4. hmmm there is SO much I would want to do. Right now I’m thinking allllll the cheeses, bacon, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, guacamole and a chipotle sauce/mayo all on the artisan roll. I don’t know if all of that is on McDonalds menu, but right now, that sounds REALLY good.

  5. I would add the normal toppings (ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato) that McDonalds adds to its burgers, then add cole slaw, jalepeno pepper jack cheese, Gouda cheese, and sharp Cheddar Cheese,

  6. a chicken burger topped with provolone cheese, crisp romaine lettuce, and smeared with delicious avocado bacon ranch spread on both sides of the bun 🙂

  7. This is such a great invention! I would definitely add double bacon, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, and pepper jack cheese to mine! And those fries? Ill add a handful to the burger and chomp away!

  8. Mine would have bacon, blue cheese, lettuce, tomato, and an onion ring. Sauce would just be ketchup and mayo

  9. I am such a simple person. I want mayo, mustard, ketchup, onions, pickles, bacon and lots of cheese. Ok, maybe not so simple. I suddenly have a craving for a burger now!

  10. Yum I would totally do a bacon cheese burger (extra bacon!) And provolone cheese. The add pickles and ranch. For the bun I totally love it on an everything bagel slightly toasted ( I know McDonald’s doesn’t use this yet, but they should!)

  11. My favorite burger has avocado instead of mayo, sauteed onions (they’re better if they’re sauteed in bacon grease), bacon, the sharpest cheddar I can find, more bacon, tomato, spinach. And it goes best with a nice, tall Sweet Tea and some sweet potato fries!

  13. I would have my burger grilled and I would have swiss, pepper jack cheeses, mushrooms, and lots of bacon.

  14. My dream burger would have caramelized onions, and maybe cooked mushrooms, not much else!

  15. My dream burger would have fresh garlic, roasted red peppers maybe some red pesto and melted mozzarella cheese of course the burger would have to be on toasted garlic bread

  16. My dream burger would be a on a toasted Kaiser, garlic mayo, garlic American cheese, mushroom sautéed in garlic butter, topped bacon with some more bacon. No one would come near me for days with all the garlic but it is a sacrifice I am willing to make.

  17. Bacon, Cheese, Tomato, Lettuce, Melted cheese, topped with MORE Bacon (Cause Everything is Better with Bacon) 🙂

  18. Okay My dream burger……
Whole wheat pretzel bun, Sriracha mayo with finely chopped cilantro, lettuce, tomato, pepper jack cheese, bacon (of course), and if i could have the burger medium please! Oh and a side of jalapenos!

  19. Boriing, but still my favorite – toasted bun, american & white cheddar, 2 patties, bacon x2, ketchup, extra pickles and of course, fries.

  20. My wife makes me jalapeno relish which I love so I would start with a spoon of that, bacon slices and some BBQ sauce

  21. My dream burger is sesame seed buns toasted, hamburger meat (well done), lettuce, bacon, onions, and bbq sauce (:

  22. My dream burger would be a thick juicy burger with American cheese, bacon, pickles, mayo, mustard, Vidalia onions, lettuce with onion crisp straws piled on top of a toasted artesian bun.

  23. I would love to top my burger with avocado, bacon, & swiss cheese! It sounds so good, I think I’ll stop by McDonalds on my way home from picking up my kids!
