When I met Jenny Lawson, I was nervous as hell. But before I met her, she read an excerpt from her book and then opened a little Q&A. People seemed just as afraid to stand up and ask a question as me, but I did it.

I asked her what tips she would give to bloggers who are just getting started. And you know what she said?

Create your own community. Build a support system of bloggers and readers. Support other bloggers.

So that’s what I’m going to do.

Recently, I decided that I had had it up to HERE with Facebook’s page nonsense.

1350ish people like my Quirky Chrissy Facebook page. In the last month, do you know how many of them saw posts I created? Maybe like 100. And that’s being generous. Some posts were lucky to get 10 views.

I like about 50 or so Facebook pages, maybe even more. I wouldn’t know because I never see them in my newsfeed. You know what I do see in my newsfeed? Ads. Ads for pages that MY FRIENDS like. Ads for shit I could care less about. Just because I have friends with babies and dogs does not mean that I want to see posts from companies who cater to moms (of babies and dogs).

Why all of this nonsense? Because Facebook doesn’t know how else to make money. So they bully us little people. The bloggers. The small business owners. The freelancers. Buy our advertising and your fans can see your shit again.

Fuck you, Facebook.

Fuck you Facebook PagesI’m joining a slew of others who’ve already migrated to a full-fledged Facebook profile for their blog or business. And you know what? I’m excited.

Friend me on Facebook. Or follow me if you’d prefer not to share your own personal profile. Not only will I be able to share with you my thoughts and posts, but also you can share with me, and most importantly, we’ll be able to interact with each other. I want to encourage conversation and entertainment.

Because I’ve built it up, and you never know what will happen, I’m going to keep my Facebook page, but if you really want to be a part of this awesome bloggy blog world, join me on Facebook. Let’s BE a community. Whether you’re a blogger or just a blog reader, we can make this what we want it to be!

What do you think? Are you going to join my mini-revolution? Because you totally should!

  1. I will have to check this out. I am kind of nervous about Facebook and the way they cavalierly handle personal information. πŸ™

  2. I think Facebook sucks. There, I said it. I started using it as a way to keep up with friends and family, and then somehow it morphed into this huge thing that doesn’t serve anyone. I feel like there’s no point in following pages because of the exact reason you said – there’s no guarantee I’ll even see the posts I’m signing up to see – and the real people don’t even use it to update on their lives anymore, it’s just all memes and nonsense. And if that’s what you like, great. But it’s not why I joined Facebook. I never use my personal account anymore (in fact I plan to delete it altogether) and I’ve always been wary for creating one for my blog because it seems like a lot of work for little to no reward.

If I do, though, I’ll totally look you up.

    1. Omg Agreed! Unfortunately, I have way too many close friends and family that live across the country to give it up completely, plus working with brands almost always requires Facebook.

  3. I’ve got a Facebook Fan page http://www.facebook.com/magical.mimi and my dot com site. I used to have blogger and still do sort of.. I’m trying to bring my blogger friends to my dot com site but I’m not sure how well that’s working out and Google+ totally fucks with me, so who knows what the hell I’m doing?? Covering all my bases and hoping I can bring everybody and everything under one crazy tent of inappropriateness cuz’ that’s who I am..
Stopping by from the Bloppy Bloggers.
    Happy New Year to you!

  4. i am IN!! BUT- here’s the thing… I actually tried to do this, and FB penalized me from sending friend requests to people I don’t know in “real life”… so I can’t send request for a freaking LONG time!!! I am done. BUT- I would love to get friend requests from others, because they actually see what I am doing/sharing. So- until I’m out of jail, I wish you to send me a friend request, deal? πŸ™‚

  5. So, I’m curious how this will work for you. In the past, Facebook has deleted accounts (whenever they damn well please) that are not under “actual” names because one of the requirements to have a regular person profile is that you be a regular person. But I know that some people have had there’s with no issues (like Lauren FilingJointly). I don’t think I could make the switch, because I’m scared crapless of being shutdown with no warning as it is!

      1. Oh, the reason I didn’t add your alter ego under my personal page is that I keep all my personal friends and blogs I follow separately. So I follow all my bloggers from my Pocketful of Joules account… but the account won’t let me follow a ‘person’, only a page. That way I comment on fellow bloggers posts from my Joules personality page… and not my actual page (helps with privacy issues).
