3 Backstabbing Games You Need to Play

Today is a glorious day my friends!

It’s International Tabletop Day! Brian and I shall celebrate by gathering with some of our board gaming buddies and playing copious amounts of games while snacking and boozing. Life is good today. In honor of this beautiful nerdy-as-fuck holiday started by one of our favorites, Wil Wheaton, and crew (Geek & Sundry, y’all), I thought I would share with you some games that you may not know exist. But should. Because holy hell are they fucking awesome. Also, these games are not for the weak at heart. These games are specifically chosen because they involve a lot of yelling. Screaming. Fuck-your-mother-ing. But I’ve played all these games with my mother. So there’s that.

Basically?

You’re welcome.

We're having a super sale in this shop!

Trailer Park Wars

When introducing non-gamers into the world of serious gaming, I used to use The Settlers of Catan as a gateway game. I like to think of it as Monopoly meets serious gamer. But then I discovered Trailer Park Wars. And oh shit you guys. This game is fucking hilarious. And ridiculous. And SUPER easy. The concept is simple, build a trailer park with trailer cards, amenities, and residents. Each amenity and resident offers benefits and (most importantly victory points). While you’re building your own park, your opponents are doing the same…but you’re also trying to destroy one another’s parks. With cards that send tornadoes through your neighboring park’s trailers, infestations and romances, you can kill, steal or move trailers, people and amenities. Flamingos flank your playing area as the victory points. Hillbilly accents and names are highly recommended. (One day, I’ll introduce you to my alter-ego Gina May). My PARENTS think it’s hysterical. My friends love playing. If you’re into horror flicks, you can also add the expansion, Trailer Park Wars: Terror in the Trailer which gives you more cards and more ways to screw your neighbor.

This was after I spilled that poor bottle of wine…

 One Night Ultimate Werewolf

Did you ever play MAFIA or WEREWOLF at Denny’s on school nights? No? Just me? Okay,  well, this is the ultimate lying and deduction game. There’s a werewolf (or a few werewolves) in the town, and the villagers are ready to hunt this shit down. Except that no one knows who’s a villager and who’s a werewolf. Each person receives a card revealing their identity, but no one knows what anyone else’s card says. The first phase of the game allows some people (werewolves and villagers) to do things in secret while everyone’s eyes are closed (there’s an app that tells you when you can do your thing!). Some people can look at other cards. Some people can look at each other. Some people can even move cards around. Then you open your eyes and the clock starts. You have to decide who the werewolf is and kill them. If you’re a werewolf, you want people to kill a villager by mistake. There’s a lot of yelling. And lying. And “YOU’RE THE WEREWOLF!!!!!” It’s pretty much amazing. This one’s a favorite in our gaming group, but I also got my parents and aunt & uncle to play on Saint Patrick’s Day. My mom was laughing so hard it hurt (probably because she’s a TERRIBLE liar). She’s still on the fence on this one. Oh yeah, this one ALSO has an expansion, which they Kickstarted last year: Daybreak. The expansion adds MORE characters. Additional features. Overall more stuff. Perfect for completionists like me (at least that’s what Brian says, anyways).

Ca$h N Guns

This one is equally as fantastic. You’re a band of thieves. You work together to rob a bank, but now what? Oh, right. You take out the competition. Each person has 3 bullets (Bang! cards) and 5 blanks (Click cards). You choose your weapon card, and on three, everyone points their foam gun (did I mention there are foam guns?) at someone else. At this point, depending on how many guns are pointed at you, you can choose to go forward for the loot (BONZAI!) or chicken out (put your gun down, homie). Those who chickened out and those who are shot, are out of the running for the loot. Everyone else divides the pot between themselves. At the end of 8 turns, the most money wins the game. Of course, I wouldn’t recommend playing with people you don’t mind stabbing in the back. I felt REALLY bad for my friend Beth’s boyfriend (and Brian), because of five of us, they were the two that I felt comfortable destroying. I made the mistake of going for Cletus once, and he wrecked me right back. So the other two guys it was.

What are some of your favorite board games? How will you celebrate International Tabletop Day? What’s the best lying, cheating, backstabbing, screw your neighbor game you’ve ever played?

No one paid me to talk about these games, but links in this post will direct you to Amazon. If you make a purchase, I may receive a teeny tiny commission. Which is awesome. So thank you.

Halloween Survival Kit Courtesy of Loot Crate

Happy Halloween bloggy friends!

I wanted to share this month’s Loot Crate box with you, so you could see how much fun I was having with it! As you remember from last month’s Galactic Loot Crate review, the October crate theme was fear. I knew that there would be some Walking Dead goodies and a sweet horror-related tee. I was pretty pumped to find this black kitten skull tee shirt on the top of the box. The first thing I saw was the kittens, and it took me a few minutes to catch the skull design. When I showed Brian, the first thing he saw was the skull. And I had to point out the kittens. He was kind of jealous (well…maybe a little {FINE. Not jealous at all]). Since I received a men’s XL, I told him he could borrow it some time. I think I may wear it tomorrow night to my first heavy metal concert. What do you think?

The rest of the box included some other sweet things that I could use for surviving a Halloween full of zombies, ghosts, and other terrifying creatures. A SuperEmoFriends print of Daryl and Merle Dixon from the Walking Dead, bite mark temporary tattoos (which may also make an appearance at the metal concert), a Walking Dead comic with special Loot Crate exclusive cover art, a book with tips for surviving every type of potential disaster (including a sharknado), and a Dead Rising 3 sledgesaw pen hammer among a few smaller items like candy, a button and a digital code for a game. I really liked the shirt (obviously) and the comic. And the tattoos. And even the print (Daryl is still my favorite character, even though I stopped watching the show, and stick to the comic now). I think the weapon is surprisingly fun (not a Dead Rising girl),  and if you check out Loot Crate’s Twitter feed, you’ll see several hilarious retweets of the hammer pen and a variety of beloved action figures.

The only thing that may make it into someone’s Christmas presents this year would be the Sharknado survival book, as it’s funny, but not something I would really read or keep on a shelf.

Next month’s Loot Crate theme is Battle, which makes me hope and wish and dream for a Hunger Games reference (release is in a few weeks, y’all!)

Which piece in the Loot Crate box would you like best? What do you think is going to be in next month’s box? Would you dig a monthly surprise box full of nerdy toys and stuff?

I was not compensated for this review, though I was provided with a complimentary Loot Crate shipment in order to facilitate this review with my honest opinion, which you always receive. I only review products that are of interest and enjoyment to me, and hopefully may benefit you.

Nerdy Things I Do When I’m Not Here

Sometimes, I get writer’s block. And I’m not really sure what to write about for this here little blog of mine. So I back off. I reflect. I do real life things that have nothing to do with blogging. Today, I’m going to tell you about some of the awesome things that I do when I’m not blogging.

  • I play mindless games. Bejeweled. Tetris. Bloons. I am a mindless game master.
  • I play board games. Nerdy ones. Arkham Horror. Settlers of Catan. Dominion. Munchkin. 7 Wonders.
  • I watch Doctor Who. And LOVE it.
  • I cuddle with my boyfriend. Is that nerdy? Did you just throw up a little bit in your mouth? That’s okay; me too.
  • I read books. You should too. They make you smarter. S-M-R-T.
  • I talk about sciency things with Brian. Okay. Brian talks about sciency things and I listen. And sometimes fall asleep. But that’s okay. Because he still loves me.
  • I plan vacations in my head. Especially to places that begin with Disney and end with World.
  • I eat cheese. Like, a lot of it. Fancy stuff. None of that plastic wrap Kraft BS.
  • I daydream about my future fame. That’s probably not nerdy either. But I do it. You bet your ass I do it.
  • I research things I want to buy. I didn’t always do this. I used to just buy things that I wanted. Now I research them first. I blame Brian.
  • I listen to Disney music and show tunes. A lot.

Maybe I’ll Write About Doctor Who…Because You Know There’s Not Enough of it on the Internet or Anything…

I may or may not have the urge to name my first born child Stormageddon.

For those of you who don’t know, I recently immersed myself in the complete and utter nerd-dom of Doctor Who. And once I dive into something that major, I obsess. Seriously. Fucking. Obsess. So obviously, I watched the entire modern series in a matter of 2 months. Did I mention that I obsess?

Like when I saw this shirt. I needed this shirt. So I bought this shirt. I can’t wait to nerd out in it at a con or two.

Keep Calm and Don't Blink

I may have pulled this shirt out of the dirty laundry last night just to take a photo shoot…and don’t mind my messy hair.

Seriously...it was at the bottom of the laundry. But I felt inspired to put it on for you guys.

Seriously…it was at the bottom of the laundry. But I felt inspired to put it on for you guys.

So yesterday, I’m not sure if you heard this or not, but Chicago kind of drowned a little bit. Flash floods across the suburbs. Roads blocked. Commutes delayed. Cars destroyed. Scary terrifying thunderstorms. Power outages. A boat load of not good. An ARK, if you will…

Belmont Train Underpass Underwater

This train station is like 7 minutes from where I live.

Needless to say, I DID NOT leave my apartment yesterday.

How does this all relate?

My girlfriend in Arizona Facebooked, “What the hell is going on in Illinois?!” And I replied with “Stormageddon.”

And then I remembered the episode of Doctor Who in which I told Brian that our first born child would be named Stormageddon. And then I Googled it for some fun things for you.

You’re quite welcome.

I sent this to Brian…and told him that our future child would totally own this. And by own it I mean wear the shit out of it. He refused to comment.

Happy Friday Everyone! Have you ever braved a terrifying storm? Snow Storms or Flooding Rain Storms? Tornadoes? I’m petrified of them, but I do love a good story…

Brian Shares Saturday: In Which Brian Cheers Me Up with Nerd Stuff

I can’t believe it’s only a few weeks until Christmas!!! Aren’t you so excited?

Brian knows that my love of Christmas is strong…which is why he not only humored me by participating in the best Christmas card ever this week, he also helped plan it out. It’s brilliant. I may have a few left if you still want one…but it’s first come, first serve.

Here’s a sort of sneak peak…

Christmas cards from Quirky Chrissy

This is NOT our Christmas card picture. It was just part of the photo shoot…

Back to the usual shares…

This week wasn’t my finest hour. I’ve been having some overwhelming feelings of not excitement because I would like to be gainfully employed with a company that is awesome. Freelancing can be fun, but it’s not constant. Plus, I miss that whole team environment that comes with a job. Brian knows what’s up though, so he’s always trying to cheer me up.

The Sloth

As you well know, sloths are kind of a big deal in this house. So he still sends me the cute sloth sitting in his desk. Sorry guys, that picture just never gets old. Ever. One day, we will have a sloth named Ebenezer. And it will be wonderful.

You Think You Had a Bad Day…

So Brian sent me this amazing link to 19 gifs of pure joy. 19 people who’ve most definitely had a worse day than me. Believe me, it’s worth clicking this link. I don’t know how or where Brian finds this shit…but it’s freakin’ awesome.

Nerdy Physics Stuff

On one of our dates in the first few months of our relationship, Brian took me to a physics discussion on Dark Matter at Fermi Lab, which is a cool science facility practically in our backyard. I was unsure as to whether it was a good idea, but he seemed so excited about it that I agreed to go. Other than it being long and during dinner time and I forgot to bring snacks so I was a little cranky, it was really cool.

So when Brian discovered this article on “something cooler than dark matter,” and came home all excited about it, I knew I had to share it with you. Perhaps you sciency and nerdy types will enjoy it. If you’re not into that, I understand…I’ve got something for you, too…

Reading Gaming Goodness

For the literati and the gamers, Brian found this most amazing comic strip in the history of ever. When I taught high school freshman, one of my favorite short stories was The Most Dangerous Game. If you have not read it before, take a few minutes and go read the story first. The full text is linked above. It’s short. I’ll wait.

Read it? Fab.

So now you know the surprise ending to The Most Dangerous Game (and if you don’t…seriously go read that shit. it will blow your mind. Maybe. At the very least, you’ll be just a little bit smarter for having read it.)

Brian sent me a comic strip called, The Most Dangerous Gamer.

Hysterical right? The competition. The angry I’m-better-than-that-guy gamer mentality. The winner. Brilliant.

An Overabundance of Cute

Yawning puppy

OH! And this is what happened when Brian discovered Google Drives has a survey format…He created a survey for me. I mean seriously. I almost said no because it was an option! If I made one the choices would be, “Yes, Of course, Absolutely, or Definitely.”

In all seriousness, though guys… Do I not have the best boyfriend in the world? I don’t know where he finds it all, but I’m always smiling.

Chicago Toy & Game Fair: Where Chrissy Gets to Be a Kid

What a whirlwind weekend!

So bright and early on Saturday morning, Brian and I trekked into the city and headed for Navy Pier to attend the Chicago Toy & Game Fair Blogger Preview. Now, I woke Brian up earlier than he normally wakes up for work. And I dragged him to an event in which there were a lot of people in close quarters. And then he had to stay the whole day, while I was competing in a tournament for like 5 hours.

Smaller than GenCon by a lot, ChiTAG was still pretty darn awesome for a girl like me. With a party-game spirit, and a nephew that I’ve promised to play lots and lots of games with, this event was the perfect way to find and try new games!

So I’ll be starting a new segment next week, in which I review and relay the experience of these awesome games from some really great game inventors (because they gave them to me to play-test!) Of course, you can count on the Chrissy-style while I review–aiming to make you laugh at the ridiculousness that ensues. And there will be ridiculousness. With me, there always is. Even if my family refuses to let me publish the pictures or videos that I produce

That being said, let’s get on with this thing. So ChiTAG. It started with a lovely continental breakfast of snacks and coffee (Yes, if you’re going to see my smiling face before 9 AM, you’re going to need to provide coffee). At the breakfast we listened to some really great speakers, including Kevin Harrington, of Shark Tank fame and Greyson MacLean, kid inventor of BrickStix (a cool Lego accessory).

We made our way to the fair, and were given an hour of open viewing before the public arrived. It was at this point that I got arrested by Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper, for trying to race to the giant Settlers of Catan carpet board…

Chicago Toy & Game Fair

Luckily for me, R2D2 was just around the corner, and he sped up and distracted them just long enough for Brian to help me escape. We made it to the giant Settlers of Catan just in time for me to steal the robber.

Giant Settlers of Catan

Of course, I later found R2 and thanked him properly.

Chicago Toy & Game Fair

And I realized. Oh. My. God! I’m hanging out with R2D2! I used to have an R2D2 underwear and sleep tank when I was a wee one! So cool!

Quirky Chrissy meets R2D2!

After leaving R2 to go find C3PO (who I used to lovingly refer to as 3PPO, because one time it made my older sister, Deven, laugh…I didn’t realize that the joke only works once, yet), Brian and I perused the fair floor. I was on a Scavenger Hunt to tweet a bunch of cool stuff.

I ran, not walked, into the Bananagrams booth for fun with giant bananagrams!

Giant Bananagrams

Thanks to the fine people at Bananagrams, I’ll also have the joy of reviewing Pairs in Pears and Zip It! Little A and I are going to rock out those games like rockstars. My goal in life is to turn my godson (Little A) into a genius gamer kid. So far, it’s working.

We played some games. We met some cool game inventors. We saw some really awesome booths.

Pirate Family Treasure Quest app and board game

This Pirate Family Treasure Quest had a really neat concept: Incorporate the app onto the game board. Compatible with little i only. Next time, I want to see Android compatibility. 🙂

Amazing Bubble Show

Giant Bubble Show. The camera could not do it justice.

Giant Word Winder

The Giant Sized Word Winder.

Dabble Game

This was probably my favorite game at the fair (Settlers aside). I’m a word nerd, you know…err excuse me, I’m a word ninja! Oh and they gave me free candy.

Then I competed in a Settlers of Catan tournament. 2nd place, 2nd place, 4th place in the rounds respectively. Not bad considering it was the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time I had ever played the game in my entire life.

Game 2: Sneaky Sneaky

Game 3: Serious Settler

I didn’t advance in the tournament, but I had a great time.

I left with all sorts of games and toys to test out with the kiddos, and I can’t wait! I’m looking forward to trying out all of my new games and reviewing them for you, fair readers! Get excited!

Chicago Toy & Game Fair Gift Bag

The contents of the gift bag and other games I was given to try out and write about!*

*I was not paid to write any of the nice things posted in this blog. I was given free admission to the Chicago Toy & Game Fair for myself and my boyfriend. I was given a gift bag with free samples, games, and promotional materials. Individual game booths also provided me with free samples of their games to play test them and write about the experience.
