Frozen Parody – Thanks for Making me Laugh Until I Cried WGN Chicago!

You guys!

I HAD to share this with you.

You know how much I swooned when I reviewed Frozen?

And you know how much I bitched when the Polar Vortex came to town?

And of course, how much I bragged when  I ran into Lake Michigan in winter (It was too cold this year, kids…I just. Couldn’t. Do. It.)?

And that one time I built a snow beach in my front yard?

Snow Beach

After the last Snomageddon in January 2011, I made myself a snow beach in subzero weather in order to win a trip to Mexico. I didn’t win. But this picture will live on forever.

Well, this video from a Chicago news guy pretty much says it all. Really, I am so jealous I didn’t come up with it, I can’t see straight!
Enjoy.

That one time I dressed like a Backstreet Boy

I don’t mess around.

When I lose a bet, make a deal, make a promise, I. Don’t. Mess. Around.

So let me give you the back story. In 2010, I was the President of the Lombard Jaycees. You may remember my previous tale of whoops, I screwed up and didn’t read the fine print when I was president. (BTW, I finally figured out how to acquire the video, so I’ve updated that post as well if you’re interested in more videos of me making an ass out of myself.)  This story is kind of like that. But not at all.

So, I was a cocky son of a bitch when I was president. I had a plan. A plan to be the best in the land. And I made a bet with the National Treasurer. He bet me that I couldn’t increase the membership in my chapter by some random number. And my best friend, Ally and I said, “Screw you, we can TOTALLY do that. When we win. And we will. You will owe us the best cheese party in all the land.”

And so Treasurer said, “Ha! Silly proud ladies! You will not win. When you do not win you shall dress in drag (well, the girl version of drag. So you will dress like boys. And dance. And it will be hilarious.)”

You see, Treasurer had previously lost a bet in which he had to dress like a lady.

I’ve actually experienced this several times in my life. I’m really good at hanging out with people who do really crazy shit when they lose a bet. Note to self: Must find video of different guy singing to Chicago soundtrack in ladies clothing.

Of course, I didn’t really realize how much of a toll student teaching would take on the last 4 months of my presidency or my life for that matter. And we lost the bet.

But Ally and I are good sports if nothing else. And if you haven’t figured out my love for the limelight yet, you’re not keeping up.

So we scavenged Goodwill stores across Chicago land on the hunt for: puffy vests, rip away pants, and muscle shirts. Then we got some giant temporary tattoos from a vending machine, and taught ourselves how to dance.

As we made our way to the year end conference, we were made aware of one thing. The social/mixer where we would be showing off our moves? Was definitely now open to the public. In years past, it was just conference attendees–Jaycees only. But they hired a fancy band to play and were letting the public come on in. So there were going to be a few extra sets of eyes on us.

We weren’t worried.

So that night, after a formal banquet we ran to our hotel room to change.

From this...

From this…

...to this.

…to this.

Backstreet Boys 2 Backstreet Boys 3

Yes. We dressed up like “Backstreet Boys.”

And then we danced our little hearts out. To a crowded room full of people. Some strangers. Some friends. And we rocked the SHIT out of that place. And I FINALLY got a hold of video proof that it happened. And that we were sort of awesome.

Afterwards, Ally and I had our own cheese party in our hotel room. Because life is just plain better with cheese.

Blog Friends, have you ever lost a bet? Did you ever have to publicly embarrass yourself for funsies? What did you have to do? Am I alone in this one?

Because I Can Totally Get Two Blog Posts Out of my Sweet Songwriting Skills.

In case you didn’t know this about me…I make up songs. Like a child. You know how little kids take a tune they know and start making up words? About common things? Like eating a sandwich or drinking a milkshake or even watching their favorite TV show?

do that.

Brian is SO lucky to live with me. Not only does he get to hear my made up songs on a daily basis, but also he gets to hear me repeat them over and over and over again until I’ve almost mastered the lyrics. And stopped filming anyway. Because the 17th time’s the charm.

If you didn’t read the post about saying goodbye my Christmas trees, you should probably do that now. Don’t worry; this video will be here when you get back.

You’ll note that even after 17 tries, I still messed the song up a smidge. Whatever. Enjoy anyways.

Walt Disney in Chicago – I Think I’m Going to Cry (Happy Tears, Guys)

Roy and Walt Disney’s  birth home, right here in Chicago, is about to be restored and transformed in an private historic museum-type community place designed to enhance and explore childhood creativity.

This may be one of the happiest days of my life.

Happy birthday Walt Disney

Oh, and today is Walt Disney’s birthday.

This afternoon, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel proclaimed today, December 5, 2013, Walt Disney Day in Chicago. 112 year ago, one of the most creative minds of our lifetime was born in the second floor of that home, designed by Flora Disney and built by Elias Disney.

You may or may not know that I’m a little bit Disney crazy. Or a lot bit Disney crazy. I guess it depends on your perspective. And how much time you spend with me. And really if you live with me at all. The creative genius behind Disney makes me cry happy tears just thinking about it.

One Man’s Dream is one of my favorite attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (nee MGM), where I learned about Disney’s creativity, imagination, and ingenuity. His work inspires millions of children and adults every day.

So when I received an e-mail about the press conference at 2156 N. Tripp Ave., I couldn’t very well say “no,” this time. Of course, knowing that something special would be happening today, on Disney’s birthday, before I knew what the purpose of the press conference was…I imagined life living mere miles from the newest Disney park. Brian, of course, told me it was completely illogical. Dream Crusher.

But a museum and preserved home are a close second. And I was present at today’s groundbreaking press conference.

Walt Disney Birthplace Restoration

Dina Benadon and Brent Young of Los Angeles purchased the home with the intent to restore it to its original splendor and turn it into a museum that will encourage children to be the creative innovators that Roy and Walt Disney were.

With the support of Roy P. Disney, the grandson of Roy and great nephew of Walt, Benadon and Young are launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise $500,000 for restoration and renovation of the Chicago Disney home.

Today, on the 112th anniversary of Walt Disney’s birth, the couple joined Alderman Rey Colon, William Delgado (Illinois State Senator), Betsy Steinberg (Director of the Illinois Film Office), Charles Pipal (Preservation architect), Tim Samuelson (Chicago Cultural Historian), Timothy Barton (Zoning Historic Preservation consultant), and the 4th grade class of William Nixon Elementary School.

The kids sang Happy Birthday to Disney before cutting into a large cake baked by Chicago’s TipsyCake, shaped like Walt Disney’s birth home.
